A Journey through the Energy Centers with Alicia
Embodiment in Contact Improvisation

The intention is to support more ease, integration and delightful discovery in our contact improvisation explorations.

Without the medium of language our offerings will be transmitted through demonstrations, imagery and of course touch.

Using the 7 energy centers as a framework for discovery we will drawn from some of the original CI solo practices, Body Mind Centering and inspiration from the natural world. as we explore practices in solo, duet and ensemble.

We will experience how the co-creativity of contact improvisation is exponentially amplified when each individual is deeply anchored in their own embodiment.

Specific skills include:

  • listening practices, especially attending to the breath, to open more choice and surprise in the dance
  • organizing the body around the point(s) of contact
  • continuously finding the ground through own and partner’s bodies so there is the freedom to dance with space
  • using spacial reach to create lightness and potentiality in the dance
  • tools for delightful falling and flying
  • whole body integration
  • techniques for incorporating ensemble dancing with contact improvisation

She has taught CI as an adjunct faculty at George Washington University, University of Denver, Naropa University and Shenandoah University. She teaches CI, yoga and pilates classes in Boulder, CO and regularly travels nationally and internationally to teach. Her long time practices of authentic movement, yoga and pilates and her love of nature are important influences on her dancing and teaching. She is a certified Hakomi therapist, certified perinatal somatic attachment therapist and certified Feminine Power transformational coach and facilitator. She is currently training to be a biodynamic breath and trauma release practitioner. She delights in exploring and discovering new depths to contact improvisation and related disciplines and is particularly interested in the intersection of physics and expression and the mind/body relationship. She is dedicated to supporting her fellow humans to be the most amazing embodied beings that we are! www.aliciagrayson.com

Floor-work, Fluidity and Flight with Tim

With a strong grounding in contact improvisation, we will experiment with the below three concepts to expand our dancing from the gentle and subtle to the acrobatic and fluidly athletic. Class exercises are strongly rooted in functional anatomical principals that emphasize clarity, momentum and release in order to build the kinesthetic awareness necessary for the dancing that follows. Due to the nature of a silent workshop/retreat, photographs, video, models and demos will be used as points of departure in this unique experience

FLOOR WORK: The floor is our first partner. How can we move on the floor efficiently and effectively in solo and with our partners, exploring large, broad contact points and finer ledges at varying speeds?

FLUIDITY: Utilizing our full physical volume – including the role of the skeleton – we will explore the flow of gravity and how to direct and redirect momentum within our own structure and with our partners.

FLIGHT: With the lightness of laughter we will experiment leaving and returning to the ground, removing the ceiling and any notion of a stopping point in our sense of boundless sky. On a more concrete level, how can we improve our timing to catch the waves of another’s up, meeting them at their peak or joining them in their descent.

Tim O’Donnell discovered CI in 1995 and continues to teach at various universities and festivals throughout Europe and the USA. His exploration in the form is strongly rooted in a deep physical listening and a sense of adventure. His classes range from the gentle and subtle to the acrobatic and fluidly athletic.

Tim O’Donnell is a New York based dance artist who has been studying, teaching, and performing in both the United States and Europe. His exploration in dance and movement is strongly rooted in a deep physical listening and a sense of adventure. His classes range from the gentle and subtle to the acrobatic and fluidly athletic. He holds an MFA in Dance and has maintained a private practice in therapeutic bodywork and somatic movement since 1991. Currently he is on faculty at Movement Research and Arizona State University.
